The special screening of “Zero to Hero”, hosted by the University and co-funded by Lee Hysan Foundation (LHF), was held on 4 September. The movie was inspired by the true story of William So Wah-wai, the retired gold medal-winning Paralympic athlete in Hong Kong. William was born with jaundice which damaged his brain and led to hearing impairment as well as occasional seizures. Despite “losing at the starting line”, he shined like a star in the running track with strong will and support from his mother. About 500 attendees including students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and their families, EdUHK students and staff attended the event. Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, EdUHK President said, “William made the legend through his own determination and diligence with the love and patience from his mother as well as the guidance and encouragement from his coach.” He added that parents and teachers who are supporting SEN students would resonate with the joys and sorrows captured in the movie.
After the film, a sharing session was attended by William and his mother Mrs So Hon Siu Ching, the real protagonists of “Zero to Hero”; Ms. Sandra Ng Kwan-Yue, the producer and starring role of the film, Mr. Jimmy Wan Chi-man, the director; Mr. Fung Ho-yeung, the actor who plays the teenage version of William; and Mr. Au Yeung Ka-kue, one of William’s coaches in real life.
