Special Education Training Program 2016 -2017 Application

The Education Bureau (EDB) is committed to implementing integrated education (IE) for students with special educational needs (SEN) who can benefit from education in ordinary schools. To further enhance the professional capacity of teachers in catering for students with SEN, the Education Bureau has launched a teacher professional development framework on integrated education since the 2007/08 school year. The Education University of Hong Kong, Department of Special Education and Counselling (SEC) is commissioned by the EDB to host and co-ordinate the following special education programs in the current year.

Basic Course on Catering for Diverse Learning Needs
(EDB Course ID: SEKG20170001) (30 hours) (One week)

The Basic Course aims at helping teachers to improve their abilities in catering for the diverse learning needs in the classroom. Participants will learn the concept and policy of inclusive education, different types of students with SEN, teaching strategies and intervention modes in catering students with SEN, and to develop a positive attitude and acceptance to students with SEN.

Advanced Course on Catering for Diverse Learning Needs
(EDB Course ID: SEKG20170002) (102 hours) (17 days)

The Advanced Course aims at enhancing the abilities of teachers to establish an inclusive environment in school. Participants will explore the concept of whole-school approach, and to learn how to develop inclusive policies, practices, and culture. They will also learn how to provide tier-2 support for students with SEN. Participants need to plan, practice and review their school programs in catering students with SEN. Participants will visit schools, organizations and institutions. They are required to join an attachment programme in order to help them put the support strategies into practice.

Thematic Courses on Supporting Students with SEN
(90 /120 hours) (Three weeks / Four weeks)

The Thematic Course aims at enhancing the abilities of teachers in teaching students with different types of SEN. Participants will be provided with in-depth training about the characteristics, educational needs of student with different types of SEN. They will also learn the supporting strategies, curriculum accommodation, teaching resources, behavioral management; teamwork and community support for students with different types of SEN. This course provides chances for participants to put the theories into practice. The Course includes the following topics:

  • Behavioural, Emotional and Social Development Needs (Focusing on the needs of students with ASD, AD/HD and EBD) (EDB Course ID: SEKG20170003)
  • Sensory, Communication and Physical Needs (Focusing on the needs of students with PD&VI)(EDB Course ID: SEKG20170004)
  • Sensory, Communication and Physical Needs (Focusing on the needs of students with HI&SLI)(EDB Course ID: )

Application should be made via the E-service system. The criterion of selection is on a first-come-first-served basis and depends on the number of applicants from each school.

These Government-funded courses are approved by the Education Bureau (EDB). Regular teachers of government and aided primary, secondary and special schools will be granted paid study leave for attending these courses and supply teachers will be provided to schools accordingly. Furthermore, teachers who have completed any combination of the BAT Courses amounting to a total of 90 contact hours or more can be recognized as having completed the acceptable refresher training courses for promotion purpose.
